Odd Duck: A Casual Michelin Bib Gourmand Delight in Austin
Continuing our exploration of the newly launched Michelin Guide in Texas, we ventured to Odd Duck, a casual restaurant in Austin that earned the Bib Gourmand distinction. As the sister restaurant to Barley Swine, Odd Duck shares a focus on seasonal Texas ingredients but offers a more relaxed atmosphere and an a la carte menu that allows diners to curate their own experience.
Must-Try Dishes: Showcasing the Flavors of Texas
Odd Duck’s a la carte menu provided the perfect opportunity to sample a variety of dishes that showcased the diverse flavors of Texas. The star of the show was undoubtedly the burger, which featured a perfectly cooked patty complemented by a fried beer cheese. While the $36 price tag for a burger without fries might raise some eyebrows, the quality and taste justified the cost.
Another standout was the ceviche, which offered a unique and well-balanced mix of flavors, enhanced by the satisfying crunch of the accompanying chips. One of the servers recommended us to crush the chips and combine everything together, which we believe it is the best way to enjoy the dish.
The capellini with chorizo, zucchini and mushrooms, while solid, was slightly overshadowed by the other offerings. The lime flavor was a bit too dominant for our taste, but it didn’t detract from the overall enjoyment of our meal.
Unfortunately, the tres leches cake dessert fell short of expectations. The combination of flavors felt disjointed, with the grapefruit addition not quite complementing the other components. Additionally, the cake lacked the traditional moist texture that makes tres leches so beloved.
Accommodating Allergies: A Refreshing Change
One of the most impressive aspects of our experience at Odd Duck was the way they accommodated dietary restrictions. From the start, our waitress demonstrated a genuine interest in ensuring that our party’s allergies were properly addressed. Her knowledge of the menu and willingness to assist us in navigating the options was a refreshing change from our experience at Barley Swine.
The level of attention and care given to allergy accommodations at Odd Duck was commendable, making it a standout choice for diners with specific dietary needs.
Why Odd Duck is a Top Pick for Austin Dining
Despite the higher price point and the slight misstep with the tres leches cake, Odd Duck remains one of our top recommendations for anyone seeking an exceptional dining experience in Austin. The combination of outstanding dishes, attentive service, and well-handled allergy accommodations sets it apart as a must-visit restaurant in the city.
Whether you’re a local looking for a new favorite spot or a visitor eager to explore the best of Austin’s dining scene, Odd Duck’s casual atmosphere and delicious food are sure to leave a lasting impression. The restaurant’s commitment to showcasing the flavors of Texas through carefully crafted dishes makes it a true gem in the city’s culinary landscape.
